Steatite Electrical Insulators
Steatite electrical insulators exhibit good mechanical strength and excellent insulation properties making it an ideal solution for both low and high voltage applications. It is an economically priced, higher performance alternative to porcelain insulators, due to their higher purity and superior mechanical and electrical properties.
In comparison to porcelain, steatite is a better alternative in particular for high frequency, low loss, high voltage insulation applications that may or may not be subject to high temperatures.
Steatite belongs to the porcelain family that consists predominantly of magnesium silicate.
Key Properties
Properties of steatite that make it suited to applications as an electrical insulator include:
- High resistance to current leakage
- High dielectric strength, even at high temperatures
- Very low dielectric loss factor
- Good mechanical strength
- Excellent heat resistance
- High electrical resistance at high temperatures
- Excellent resistance to UV radiation
- Fairly high thermal conductivity
- Resistance to chemical and corrosion attack
